When glimpsed at through the eyes of the soul, our identity becomes clear and is remembered. We are more than we seem and we are more than we know. Souls written into existence by an extension of the divine. At first we were lost, but now we are found.
“How do you know she is a unicorn?” Molly demanded.
“No cat out of it’s first fur can ever be deceived by appearances. Unlike human beings, who enjoy them.” – ‘The Last Unicorn’, by Peter S. Beagle
See Not with the Mind’s Eye, But With the Eyes of the Soul
In ‘The Last Unicorn’, by Peter S. Beagle, the magician uses magic to turn his friend the unicorn into a woman so as to disguise her and save her from capture by the king. But this magic comes with a cost. The unicorn being an immortal entity, is now turned into a mortal who faces an ending unknown to her, death.
Now disguised in her vulnerable and mortal state, she risks losing herself and so losing the memory of the truth about what she really is…. a unicorn. Molly as another friend, stands by to protect her and tries to remind her of who she is so that her power may not be forgotten and escape her.
It is the cat which sees through the eyes of the soul. Undeceived by mere physical appearances. The cat sees past the illusion and deception. Undistracted or deceived by the physical, the cat sees her for the unicorn she truly is.
Lesson Brought to Life: Deceived by the Mind’s Eye
Brought from the fictional story told in the novel. This scene inspires reflection on a real-life lesson.
The story of the unicorn is our story. Souls, thrust into a physical body. If not careful, we lose ourselves in the illusion of the physical and find it difficult to differentiate between truth and illusion.
Much of what we face in life is a matter of the mind. Life can appear as a funhouse mirror, full of illusions and distortions. This is the cost of trusting the mind’s eye.
We have forgotten and we have been disillusioned. To be all that we can be, is to be all that we already are. It can feel counterintuitive. For it often requires a great unlearning, in order to understand how we came to be here and to remember who and what we really are.
Reminding Ourselves and Each Other of What We Really Are
Each of us is a beautiful soul. A direct extension of a power and intent beyond anything that the human mind could possibly fathom.
We are not alone in this. We are extensions of each other. As such, we are in partnership and have a responsibility to uphold our commitment to each other. Through our collaboration, we co-create our experience of the world.
We are strong when we are all strong. To support another, is to support ourselves.
When we take the time to see each other, really see each other. Disillusion falls away and the truth of each of us is revealed.
When one falters and forgets their own greatness, we must remind them. Just as we need reminding from others of our own greatness from time to time.
In this way, we support each other and join forces in a great remembering of who we really are, where we come from, and the divine intent behind the writing of our existence.
Our True Selves as Seen Through the Eyes of the Soul
For a time, we are souls traveling through a physical realm. It is easy to become convinced that the sum of one’s value is defined by what can be see with the mind’s eye.
But we are not of the physical. We are guests here at best. Souls from the realm of the spirit. Passing through life within a vessel of a physical body.
We are more than we seem. We are more than we know.
It takes a commitment of daily practice to hear the truth of the soul. But if we are to really see and if we are to really know…than we must let the message of the soul be heard.
Now we are called to see and to be granted true vision. For the vision of the soul will never lead us astray. The chaos of the world will fall away, and peace will reign for ever more.
